Rangers try to solve Isles at MSG
Hockey Betting Lines
03/24/2010 -
(Sportsbook Betting Lines) - If the Rangers are going to climb back into the playoff
race, finding a way to beat the Islanders would be helpful.
The visiting Islanders will try to beat the Rangers for the fourth time in
five meetings this season as the two New York clubs face off at Madison Square
Garden.
The Rangers have lost three straight and are just 3-5-2 this month as they
have fallen into a tie with Florida for 10th place in the Eastern Conference.
They are seven points back of the eighth and final playoff position with 10
games to play.
The Blueshirts' play against the Islanders hasn't helped. The Rangers won five
of six versus their Long Island rivals last year, but have gone just 1-2-1
against them this year. The two franchises meet tonight for the first time
since the Islanders posted a 3-2 overtime win at MSG on Dec. 26 on Kyle
Okposo's goal with 47 seconds left in overtime.
The Rangers were last in action on Sunday versus one of the teams they are
chasing for the East's final playoff spot, but they came out flat against the
Boston Bruins in a 2-1 setback. Michael Del Zotto got New York on the board
with 3:04 to play in the game and Henrik Lundqvist made 29 saves.
"It's really disappointing and frustrating," Lundqvist told the Rangers' Web
site."It was the biggest game of the year, so far, and we couldn't match them.
As long as we have a chance [for a playoff spot], though, we will continue to
fight."
New York, which has lost four of its last five at home, may be without two
players tonight in Sean Avery (foot) and Ryan Callahan (lower body), who are
both questionable due to injury.
Though the Islanders have won both of their matchups at Madison Square Garden
in addition to five of their last seven at the historic venue, they have lost
10 of their last 11 overall as the guest and are 1-1-1 on a four-game road
trip that ends tonight.
The Isles fell to 10-20-7 as the road team this year on Saturday with a 1-0
setback to the Kings, as Los Angeles netminder Jonathan Quick stopped all 26
shots fired his way.
Dwayne Roloson made 25 saves for New York, which has lost two straight
following a three-game win streak and is 10 points behind a playoff spot with
10 games to play.
"We had some chances. You have to give Jonathan Quick a lot of credit,"
said Roloson after his team was shut out for the fifth time this year. "He
played very well at the other end. It's tough on back-to-back games. We came
out sluggish and the first period we didn't generate that many opportunities.
Every good shot we had, Jonathan made a great save."

Big 12 Conference betting odds
Work left to do: Texas Tech, Oklahoma State, Kansas State
Texas joins Texas A&M and Kansas as locks after getting league win No. 11. Texas Tech greatly helped its own hopes and crippled OK State's with the two-point win Saturday. Is K-State the last reasonable hopeful? Could be an elimination match in Stillwater on Tuesday, at least for the Cowboys.
Work left to do:
Texas Tech [18-11 (7-7), RPI: 44, SOS: 12] A critical two-point win over OK State leaves the Red Raiders with Baylor and at Iowa State left. Get both and the Red Raiders likely are good to go. Get one and there could be some interesting comparisons with a K-State team that could finish two or three games "ahead" of them in the standings but doesn't have any of the quality wins Texas Tech has. Not a lot in nonconference play (against Arkansas in Little Rock being the best win, by far) to lean on.
Oklahoma State [18-9 (5-8), RPI: 50, SOS: 35] Still without a road win, the Cowboys now need to win two on the road just to get to .500 in conference play. It's hard to recall a team (OK, other than Clemson) falling so precipitously from lock status to almost certainly out of the NCAAs at this point. There are wins to be had in the last three, including a very big home game against K-State on Tuesday, but this team is reeling. Can you tell the pressure to win is getting to them with the way the final possession played out at Texas Tech? There are some good nonconference performances to lean on, specifically beating Missouri State and Syracuse on neutral floors and Pitt in OK City, but if the Pokes don't right this very, very soon, that won't be enough.
Kansas State [20-9 (9-5), RPI: 56, SOS: 96] It pays to be in the Big 12 North. The nine league wins are Colorado (twice), Missouri (twice), Iowa State (twice), Baylor, Nebraska and (a good one against) Texas. That helps explain the middling computer profile. The win over USC is nice, but the nonconference leaves a lot to be desired. The game at OK State in Stillwater on Tuesday is huge, as it could KO the Cowboys and leave K-State with a home date against Oklahoma with which to work.
