Not much has changed so far in 2010. The defending league champion Phillies set their sights on a three-game sweep of the lowly Nationals when the two NL East members conclude their season- opening series this afternoon at Nationals Park. Philadelphia's potent offense already seems to be in midseason form. After pounding Washington pitching for 13 hits in an 11-1 rout on Monday, the Phillies hit Nats starter Jason Marquis hard en route to an 8-4 victory last night. Ryan Howard led the charge by going 2-for-5 with three RBI, with the star first baseman homering for the second straight game. Placido Polanco and Chase Utley also had two hits apiece and combined to score five runs to aid Philadelphia's offensive attack. "Fortunately for us we're getting those hits, getting those runs," said Howard afterward. "Guys are picking each other up." Marquis, a 15-game winner for Colorado last season who signed with the Nationals as a free agent over the winter, lasted just four innings in his debut with his new club. The veteran righty was reached for six runs on eight hits and walked three before exiting. "It's a long season. I just have to keep working at getting better," Marquis said. "Hopefully next time around I can work a little deeper." Phillies starter Cole Hamels also struggled some with his command, issuing four walks and tossing 103 pitches in his five-inning stint. He still managed to earn the win after holding Washington to three runs (2 earned) on five hits. Ryan Madson, filling in for injured closer Brad Lidge, picked up his first save of 2010 after getting the final four outs. Ian Desmond went 2-for-5 with a homer and two RBI for the Nationals, with Josh Willingham collecting three hits and knocking in a run in a losing cause. Wednesday's win was the Phillies' fifth straight over Washington and 14th triumph in the last 15 meetings between the teams. Philadelphia went 15-3 against the Nats last season and posted a 7-2 mark in Washington for the campaign. The Nationals will turn to Craig Stammen today in hopes of reversing their recent fortunes in this series. After showing promise last year in a rookie campaign that was cut short by an elbow injury, the 26-year-old earned a spot in the 2010 rotation by posting a 3.72 earned run average in five spring training appearances with the club. Stammen made 19 starts for Washington after being called up from the minors last May and went 4-7 with a 5.11 ERA and one complete game. The right-hander struggled at times in his outings at Nationals Park, where he had a suspect 6.02 ERA in nine starts and served up seven homers in 49 1/3 innings of work. This will Stammen's first career encounter with the Phillies. Philadelphia had planned to send out projected No. 3 starter Joe Blanton this afternoon, but he had to be placed on the 15-day disabled list after straining an oblique muscle during a throwing session last week. In his place will be youngster Kyle Kendrick, giving the lanky right-hander an opportunity to state his case to remain in the rotation when Blanton returns. Kendrick earned a spot on the Opening Day roster with an excellent spring in which he yielded just five runs -- four earned -- and 14 hits over 24 2/3 innings of work. The Phillies hope that success can carry over to the regular season, as he's had bouts of inconsistency at the major-league level in the past. After going an impressive 10-4 with a 3.87 ERA in 20 starts as a rookie in 2007, Kendrick struggled to a 5.49 ERA the following year and spent most of last season at Triple-A Lehigh Valley, where he compiled a 9-7 mark with a 3.34 ERA over 24 starts. The 25-year-old has faced Washington six times previously and holds a 1-2 record with a 5.06 ERA lifetime against the Nationals.
