Phillies' Garcia has mild tendonitis in right bicep

03/24/2007 - Clearwater, FL (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Phillies starting pitcher Freddy Garcia, acquired in an offseason trade with the White Sox, has been diagnosed with mild tendonitis in his right bicep, the team announced on Saturday.

Garcia departed Wednesday night's game against the Toronto Blue Jays after giving up five hits and three runs in an inning of work. Dr. Michael Ciccotti, the Phillies' team doctor and director of medical services, examined Garcia on Saturday afternoon and determined the extent of the injury.

Garcia will continue daily treatments and the Phillies hope that he'll be able to take his turn in the rotation during the first week of the season. Ironically enough, Garcia's potential replacement in the starting rotation, Jon Lieber, was diagnosed with a mild strain of his right oblique muscle. It is unknown how long he will be sidelined.

Despite logging an impressive ERA in spring straining, Philadelphia manager Charlie Manuel demoted Lieber to the bullpen. With the offseason acquisitions of Garcia and Adam Eaton, Lieber became the odd man out of the rotation.

The 37-year-old Lieber is in the final year of a three-year, $21 million deal. The right-hander went 17-13 with a 4.20 ERA in 2005, but had an awful 2006, going 9-11 with a 4.93 ERA despite a strong finish.

Phillies catcher Carlos Ruiz is also suffering from mild tendonitis of his right bicep.
