Ottawa beats Buffalo for ninth straight time

Hockey Betting Lines

03/26/2010 - Buffalo, NY (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Jason Spezza had a goal and an assist and Brian Elliott turned in another strong outing with 41 saves, as Ottawa kept the Sabres from clinching a playoff berth and gained ground in the division with a 4-2 win at HSBC Arena.

Spezza's tip-in of Daniel Alfredsson's point shot on the power play served as the eventual game-winner late in the second period.

Elliott, who had posted back-to-back shutouts against Philadelphia and Montreal coming in, held a hungry Buffalo squad to one goal from there to seal a third consecutive Senators win.

It's Ottawa's first three-game winning streak since setting a club record with 11 consecutive victories from January 14-February 4. The Senators had lost five straight and eight out of nine prior to their recent success and moved three points clear of Montreal for fifth place in the Eastern Conference standings.

Alfredsson and Chris Kelly also logged a goal and an assist for Ottawa, while Peter Regin got his 11th goal of the season.

Jason Pominville and Tim Kennedy scored for Buffalo, while Ryan Miller stopped 27 shots.

Instead of locking up a spot in the postseason, Buffalo saw its lead over Ottawa in the Northeast Division shrink to five points and had a four-game win streak halted.

It was the Sabres' ninth straight loss in the series and fifth this season. The teams have one game against each other left, a potential division-deciding re-match set on April 10 in Ottawa.

It took a fluke goal to finally solve Elliot with 9:08 remaining in the second. Kennedy banked it in off the skate of Senators defenseman Erik Karlsson from behind the net to make it a 2-1 game.

Spezza's tip in front of Alfredsson's one-timer re-established Ottawa's two- goal advantage on the power play about three minutes later.

It remained 3-1 with 40 minutes in the books, but the Sabres drew back within one just 1:34 into the third when Pominville roofed a wrister past Elliot on a rush down the left wing.

Elliot logged 11 saves the rest of the way and survived an Ottawa bench minor with 2:56 to play. Alfredsson then assured the outcome on an empty-netter with one second left.

Ottawa took an early lead on Kelly's disputed score 6:42 in. Jarkko Ruutu flung a wobbly shot in on Miller and Kelly used the backhand to push it across the goal line while the net was coming off its moorings.

The Sens' Mike Fisher received a five-minute boarding major and game misconduct for running Patrick Kaleta into the end boards with 4:28 left in the opening period.

A good portion of Buffalo's advantage was wiped out, though, with Tim Connolly's slashing penalty and it remained 1-0 after 20 minutes.

Elliot continued his stellar play with 17 saves in the first, and Ottawa had a two-goal lead 5:36 into the middle stanza.

Spezza took possession of the puck near the Sabres' net and slipped a blind pass back to the right circle where Regin unleashed a blistering shot to the top left corner.

2007 NFL Football Betting Preview

“You play to win the game!”

Those are the words of notoriously intense head coach Herman Edwards. Unfortunately, from a bettors’ perspective, most coaches don’t feel that way about the NFL preseason. August is a time to evaluate young players, finalize the depth chart and pray your star players stay healthy.

The trick to making money during the exhibition schedule is identifying coaches – like Edwards – who can’t stand losing even when there's nothing on the line.

The New York Jets betting won 15 of 21 preseason games and went 14-7 against the spread (ATS) during Edwards’s five-year tenure with the club. In his first season as the Kansas City Chiefs field boss, the team improved from 0-4 to 2-2.

Identifying win-a-holics like Edwards is a good start if you plan betting the preseason – even though most say you shouldn’t ... but what the hell do they know anyway?

Here’s a brief rundown of two teams that have a habit of winning during the second-stringers’ season, and another club that has a good chance of exceeding this year.

New York Giants betting lines

Playing in the media hub of North America can be stressful but the press can’t write anything negative about the way Tom Coughlin’s boys play in the preseason. The Giants won and covered all four games last summer, improving their record to 7-1 both straight up (SU) and against the spread over the last two years.

Coughlin has shown he’s not afraid to give his starters more time in the second preseason game than most of his colleagues, no doubt one of the reasons his team has been so dominant.

Dallas Cowboys betting lines

Bettors can count on America’s team early on. The Cowboys are 14-6 both SU and ATS since 2002 in warm-up contests. Former coach Bill Parcells, the coach of the team the last four years, has an intimidating, in-your-face presence – surely a reason Dallas has had so much early success.

The Big Tuna won’t be strolling the sidelines with looks of disgust, but new coach Wade Phillips will be anxious to make a good first impression for owner Jerry Jones.

Dallas plays the Indianapolis Colts and the Denver Broncos before things get serious. They then face the Houston Texans in their third contest (the game starters see most game time) and finish off with the Minnesota Vikings.

Expect a Dallas team able to walk away with another 3-1 preseason record.

Oakland Raiders betting lines

This team scored a league-worst 12 offensive touchdowns last season, so the rookies and veterans each have something to prove. There’s a bounty of first-unit jobs up for grabs and plenty of bodies competing for those slots.

First-time head coach Lane Kiffin will be eager to impress an owner who employs the philosophy, “Just win, baby!”

The 32-year-old Kiffin has to command respect from a locker room full of players older than him. All of these factors should lead to purpose in preseason.

Don’t forget: before playing like a team that belonged in NFL Europe, Oakland went 4-1 (both SU and ATS) in exhibition games.
