Giguere nets SO in Toronto debut, helps Leafs down Devils

02/02/2010 - Toronto, ON (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Jean-Sebastien Giguere made his Toronto debut a memorable one by turning aside all 30 shots, as the new-look Maple Leafs snapped a six-game losing streak with a 3-0 decision over the New Jersey Devils in the first stage of a home-and-home set at Air Canada Centre.

Giguere, acquired from Anaheim for goaltender Vesa Toskala and forward Jason Blake on Sunday, recorded his second shutout of the season and 34th of his career.

Nikolai Kulemin, Phil Kessel and Francois Beauchemin each tallied for Toronto, which also acquired two-time All-Star defenseman Dion Phaneuf and forward Fredrik Sjostrom as part of a six-player trade with Calgary on Sunday.

Yann Danis, playing in only his eighth game of the season, stopped 23-of-26 shots for the Devils, who have lost four of their last five games.

Toronto opened the scoring 4:40 into the contest when Kulemin put home a rebound after Danis made the initial save on a Sjostrom shot.

Kessel then put the Leafs up 2-0 at 2:23 of the middle stanza. Tyler Bozak led a line rush down the right side and after Danis was unable to control another rebound, the puck came out to the slot where Kessel was able to fire it into a relatively open net.

Beauchemin gave Toronto a three-goal cushion while on the power play at 14:09 on a blast from the point that beat Danis through the five hole.

New Jersey came out for the third in desperation mode, but Giguere stopped all 12 shots in the period.

Game Notes

Toronto improved to 10-12-5 at Air Canada Centre this season, while New Jersey has dropped six of the last seven on the road and are now 17-9-2 as the visiting team this year. The Devils will host the finale of this home-and- home on Friday...Phaneuf had a solid game with four shots, three blocks, six hits and a fight in over 24 minutes of ice time.
