Aggies and Bears meet in clash of ranked Big 12 foes
NCAA Basketball Betting Lines
02/24/2010 -
Waco, TX (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - The 22nd-ranked Texas A&M Aggies and the 24th-
ranked Baylor Bears are set to collide in a Big 12 Conference showdown.
Texas A&M is playing with a tremendous amount of confidence right now, as the
squad has won five of its last six games to move to 19-7 overall and 8-4 in
conference. On Saturday, the Aggies defeated Iowa State in a 60-56 final on
the road to even their true road record at 4-4.
As for Baylor, it carried a three-game win streak into Saturday's road clash
with Oklahoma State, but that game ended in an 82-75 defeat. The Bears are
still an impressive 20-6 overall, including 7-5 in league play, and they are
happy to return to Waco where they are 13-1 thus far.
Texas A&M beat Baylor by a 78-71 final less than three weeks ago, and the
Aggies own a 127-73 series lead over the Bears.
Donald Sloan is scoring 17.9 ppg this season to lead Texas A&M by a
comfortable margin. Derrick Roland checks in with 10.5 ppg, and Bryan Davis
provides 10.0 ppg and 7.9 rpg to go along with 46 blocks. The Aggies are
generating 72.1 ppg while holding opponents to 65.0 ppg on 40.9 percent field
goal efficiency. Against Iowa State last time out, Texas A&M shot just 39.6
percent from the field, including 4-of-15 from three-point range. Fortunately,
the Aggies limited the Cyclones to 32.2 percent overall shooting. Khris
Middleton scored 14 points in the win, and Sloan tallied 12. As for Davis, who
wasn't much of a factor offensively, he did secure 13 rebounds.
The trio of LaceDarius Dunn, Tweety Carter and Ekpe Udoh has powered the Bears
to their 20 wins this season. Dunn is scoring 18.9 ppg on the strength of his
41.1 percent shooting from three-point range, and Carter turns in 16.3 ppg to
go along with 136 assists. As for Udoh, who is often overshadowed, he provides
13.4 ppg, 10.5 rpg and 112 blocks, numbers that should earn him some level of
All-Big 12 recognition. Baylor is scoring 77.1 ppg while limiting opponents to
64.8 ppg on 37.9 percent field goal efficiency. Carter scored 25 points
against Oklahoma State on Saturday, and Dunn chipped in 14. Still, Dunn may
have done more harm than good with his 5-of-17 shooting, as the Bears
connected on only 38.8 percent of their field goal attempts. Udoh ripped down
16 rebounds in the setback.

El Duque expected to throw Tuesday
PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. -- New York Mets pitcher Orlando Hernandez, sidelined at spring training because of arthritis in his neck, is expected to resume throwing on Tuesday.
Hernandez received a cortisone shot Thursday after leaving camp and returning to New York to have his neck examined. The 41-year-old right-hander is penciled in as the team's No. 2 starter behind Tom Glavine.
El Duque's health is a major issue for the Mets, who won the NL East in 2007 and came within one victory of the World Series. Their aging and unsettled rotation is a big question mark this year.
MySportsbook.com has the Mets as -110 favorites to repeat as NL East champions odds.
Hernandez went 11-11 with a 4.66 ERA last season, including 9-7 with a 4.09 ERA in 20 starts after the Mets acquired him from Arizona in late May. But he missed the playoffs because of a torn calf muscle.
New York already is without Pedro Martinez, out until at least midseason following rotator cuff surgery. Among those competing for starting jobs are prospects Mike Pelfrey, Philip Humber and Jason Vargas, plus veterans Chan Ho Park, Jorge Sosa and Aaron Sele.
Notes: Mets manager Willie Randolph is excited about two new utility players he could have on his bench: Damion Easley and David Newhan. ''Their value is really all over the place,'' Randolph said. Easley can play anywhere in the infield and could be used as an emergency outfielder, though Randolph said he would prefer to keep the veteran in the infield. Newhan, meanwhile, can play second base, third or any outfield position for the Mets. ''I love versatility,'' Randolph said. ''I love guys that can give me options when I need them to step in.''
